About The Lodge

The Lodge first met in a Bairnsdale schoolhouse on January 21st 1870 under the English Constitution No. 1317. The meeting night was originally fixed on the first Friday nearest the full moon especially important in those days to allow the members sufficient light to safely travel long distances to and from the meeting.

The foundation stone of our historic building was lain on Friday 9th September 1870 and we have proudly owned, maintained and met at the Francis street address ever since. Although many additions, alterations and improvements have been made over the years, all who convene a the heritage listed building would agree that it still imparts a unique feeling of charm, grace and character to all our meetings. I think the knowledge that today we can stand in exactly the same spot where so many of our forebears have stood and speak the same words, adds a genuine traditional link to the past of thus increases immensely the enjoyment and appreciation of the ceremonies conducted.

The honour board reads like a roll call of so many pioneering families of early Bairnsdale and explains a connection with a number of local streets, rivers and other landmarks that were named after these founding fathers in recognition of the contribuiton they made ot the establishment and development of the city. Also of some significance is an intersting fact, that for more than 90 years, no man has served in our Lodge as WM for more than one year, so it seems, to have been a Master of Union is a very rare and privileged experience.

Please come and visit us when you are in our area. You will certainly be made most welcome in the East, warmly entertained in our South and no doubt, induced to partake of the legendary hospitality provided by our fantastic ladies in the Lodge.

Special annual events include Australia Day BBQ – Christmas Family Fun Day – Widows Luncheon – Masonic Church service plus other social outings, fund raisers and, of course, visits to our sister Lodges throughout the year.
