About The Lodge
In 1953, eighteen Freemasons including many members of local churches met in the Ringwood Masonic Hall to discuss the possibility of forming a new Lodge. In keeping with the background of those present and the strong sentiments expressed about alcohol consumption in the community, it was decided to form a “dry” (non-alcoholic) lodge called JONADAB.
JONADAB Lodge thrived in those early days, attracting a number of local identities who were then “movers and shakers” in the community; many of whom are still remembered as evidenced by local community landmarks and street names around Ringwood.
Excited to have received full accreditation in 2007, the Lodge has a strong tradition of excellent administration, commitment to quality ceremonial ritual, and an on-going element of Masonic education.
There is a lovely sense of community at the heart of the JONADAB Lodge. There is a monthly social function for Members and their families and visitors, including BBQs, film nights, visits to local attractions such as the C.J. Dennis “Singing Gardens”, a tour of the magnificent MCG sporting complex, Healesville Sanctuary, Puffing Billy train journey, Day trip to Marysville and weekends away, to name but a few. It is such events that nurture the feelings of unity and harmony that are essential to the ethos of the Lodge.
A unique characteristic of JONADAB is the Ladies Auxiliary, which also meets on Lodge night, allowing Members & Partners to attend lodge together. The Ladies Auxiliary is committed to coordinating a program that has become known as “Baby Bundles” – a service which sees the skills of the ladies being used to create clothes for new-born babies in need and toiletries for their mothers. These goods are distributed via Accredited Welfare Agencies throughout the Maroondah area.
JONADAB continues its aim as a “dry” lodge, and is strong and active in community affairs – with total donations in the past 11 years in excess of $40,000 to charitable causes; Irabina Childhood Autism Services, Monkami Centre Croydon, Victorian Guide Dogs puppy training program, Anglicare's “Linking Youth & Families Together”, Salvation Army's Child Sponsorship Scheme (ongoing annually), Evolve at Typo Station working with “at risk” young people and many other local charities. JONADAB also offers an Education Scholarships for Norwood Secondary College, and additional financial support for their underprivileged students.
The age range of members of the JONADAB Lodge reveals the commitment and fervor of its Freemasons. Jonadab has 38 members – 32 are retired or semi-retired, whilst 6 (all under 45 years old) are fully employed. Jondab is also pleased to welcome its newest recruit – an 18 year old member!
