New Generation Progress Meets Old World Charm at Walhalla

In true Masonic spirit, newly formed Lodge of Progress braved the spectre of bushfires and took the Lodge to the tiny hamlet of Walhalla. The struggling Walhalla Brethren held their regular meeting over to welcome the Progress members and their partners.

Ascending the winding staircase takes on a whole new meaning in Walhalla. To attain the Lodge room at the summit of the staircase, 50 steps up the side of the valley have to be negotiated by all; irrespective of physical fitness. Due to the Lodge being open, a significant number of ‘tourists’ were shown around the ancient Lodge room prior to the meeting getting underway.

The partners of the members and non-Masonic visitors toured the village while the Brethren conducted the ceremony. Both Lodges came together to hold what became a combined Lodge meeting and conduct a Second Degree. Bro. Ben Furner was passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft in the afternoon meeting followed by festivities in the nearby Star Hotel.

Progress members booked out the entire venue which meant the festivities continued, in the form of a snake pit, into the very early hours of the morning. Some took the opportunity to indulge in a midnight exploration of the village in the dark – a somewhat nerve wracking and scary endeavour in the near zero light. There were several sore heads the following morning.

The visit to Walhalla proved to be not just an excellent weekend of Freemasonry, in fact it was a fantastic example of friendship, conviviality and mateship.

Lodge of Progress is a new Lodge formed in the South East around Casey and Cardinia. We meet bi-monthly at Berwick. Our Lodge focuses on friendship and the involvement of partners, with most Lodge meetings being under one hour’s duration followed by a dinner with our partners at a local dining establishment. The usual formalities at the festive board are only held at the annual Installation ceremony. In keeping with our formation philosophy, the Lodge travels once a year to a historic venue to conduct a meeting.
