Another Day, Another Peloton
Picture this if you will…a cold, grey, damp, morning at Flemington Race Course, riders with their steeds of all shapes, sizes and colours milling around the mounting yard. You might be excused for thinking this was just another ordinary morning at Flemington however, that was not the case: not on Sunday March 31 2019. The riders were in lycra instead of silk and the steeds were metal and carbon rather than flesh and blood. The reason we were all there was the MS Melbourne Cycle, a major awareness and fundraising effort for Victorian suffers of Multiple Sclerosis.

Worshipful Brothers Rod Pilmore (Werribee Endeavour) and Malcolm Mann (The Duke of Abercorn) were among those on the start line making sure the Square and Compasses jersey of the Freemasons Cycling Club (Vic) was represented in yet another charity ride peloton. WBro. Rod, who was riding in memory of his late sister-in-law Margaret who had suffered from MS, raised $645 for the cause. WBro. Malcolm participated to support Rod on the road because its better to ride with a friend.
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often debilitating disease which attacks the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves). It is the most common neurological disease in young adults. Unfortunately, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis…yet. There are constantly new discoveries in research helping to inch toward a cure, and advancement in treatments of this lifelong disease. As well as helping to provide support to people living with multiple sclerosis, MS Melbourne is also providing funding for research so a cure for this debilitating disease can be found.
The 2019 edition of the MS Melbourne Cycle raised $612,335!
So, for 50kms around the streets of Melbourne and over the Westgate Bridge we rode and, as you will see from the photos, we had a good morning.
